USING ART TO REACH THE NATIONS

coffee on a table with people talking in distance

Twelve of us sit in a circle at the back of the Art Cafe to pray and to catch up on how we have seen God moving in the lives of people who have passed through recently to check out the latest exhibition on the miracles of Jesus. We are from seven different countries and very different backgrounds. Over the last year we have become unexpectedly bonded in this unique ministry endeavor to create a welcoming space where the beauty of Jesus and his message is communicated creatively through art, and where open conversation is fostered in a safe and respectful atmosphere. The Art Cafe is a long, narrow room with a glass storefront window opening onto a regular street in our city of 1.5 million people. The rotating exhibition of original art is displayed in the front half of the room. People can view the paintings while listening to passages of scripture in their native language. The back of the room is set up like an inviting living room where people can converse while sipping on free tea or coffee. Open every night and run by the twelve of us volunteers, there are times when we wonder what we’re doing, like when no one shows up. But there are nights that are bustling with university students enjoying a space where they can talk about real issues and grapple with spiritual questions. We hear about a special night last month when a local man who comes regularly gave his life to Jesus. The change in him is evident to those who know him. We don’t know all the ways that God is moving and working in the people all around us here in this dusty Middle Eastern city. We are reminded, however, of the priority of prayer. Our job is to wait expectantly on him and to simply obey is voice as he leads us. Right now that means making art, serving tea, engaging again with that pharmacist who keeps showing up with more questions. God is working here in our city, and it is our joy to be partnering with him in this unique way through the Art Cafe.
